New Haven, Conn. - The Princeton University women's squash team saw its bid for a third-straight national championship come up just a bit short as the Tigers fell to Pennsylvania 5-4 in the Howe Cup final at Yale.
Penn finished the season with a perfect record and won its first ever Ivy League and national championships. Princeton's only losses on the year came to the Quakers as Penn had defeated Princeton 5-4 during the regular season.
"It's disappointing, but that is tempered by how well everyone competed," said Princeton coach Gail Ramsay. "It was a very close match. Overall, the women gave a tremendous performance. We were so close and it was a possibility, but everyone gave an incredible effort and played with great determination."
Penn led 4-3 with two matches still on the court. Courtenay Green outlasted Paige Kollock in five games to give Princeton its fourth point, but Penn's Helen Bamber defeated Liz Kelly in three games at No. 4 for the clinching point. "The players have done a great job all year long," said Penn Head Coach Demer Holleran, a member of Princeton's 1989 national championship team. "This is the first national title for our players, so it's really exciting."
Julia Beaver (No. 1), Blair Irwin (No. 3) and Anna Minkowski (No. 6) were Princeton's other winners.
