PRINCETON, N.J. - The Princeton women's basketball team finds itself in a deep hole, dropping its fourth Ivy League game of the season with a 67-58 loss to Yale this evening at Jadwin Gym. Allison Cahill (Fr., Uxbridge, Mass.) came off the bench to lead the Tigers with 15 points.
The Tigers led in the opening minutes, but with the score knotted at 8-8, the Elis went on a 10-2 run to build an eight-point lead at 18-10 with 9:50 to play in the opening half. A jumper by Maria Smear with 1:09 on the clock gave Yale a 29-23 lead. Cahill hit a three-pointer with 41 seconds left, and Lee Culp (Fr., High Point, N.C.) connected on a jumper as time expired to send Princeton into the lockerroom trailing 29-28 at halftime. Both teams traded baskets for the opening minutes of the second half, but an 11-2 run sparked by back-to-back three pointers by Cahill, gave the Tigers a 39-37 lead at the 14:15 mark. The Elis would not be denied, as Smear connected on two shots from long range to fuel a 16-2 run that gave Yale a 53-41 advantage--its biggest lead of the game--with 6:23 on the clock. The Tigers drew within six at 59-53, but that would be as close as they would get. The Bulldogs were a perfect 10 for 10 from the free throw line in the final 44 seconds for the 67-58 final score.
Brooke Lockwood (Sr., Palatine, Ill.) joined Cahill in double figures, scoring 12 points on 6 of 6 shooting from the floor. Lockwood and Hilary Reser (So, Beaverton, Ore.) led the team with five rebounds. The Tigers shot 36% from the floor, compared to 44% for Yale.
The Tigers were without their second leading scorer, Kate Thirolf (Sr., Rockville, Md.), who sat out due to a back injury.
With the loss the Tigers drop to 4-15 on the year, 1-4 in Ivy League play. The Bulldogs improve to 7-12, 3-3 Ivy. Princeton will be back in action next Friday in Hanover as it faces Dartmouth at 7 p.m.
