NORFOLK, Va. - There's nothing like starting off on the right foot. The Princeton baseball team surely did that this evening against Old Dominion. The Tigers defeated the Monarchs 8-3 to end ODU's four-game winning streak. This was Princeton's first win in a night game since march 23, 1996.
Mark Grayson (So., Kingwood, Texas) walked to open the game and scored on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Hanson (Jr., Cumberland, Maine). The lead was short lived, though as the Monarchs came back with two runs off of starting pitcher Jason Quintana (Sr., Chester, N.J.) in the bottom of the second inning.
Princeton's first hit of the game was a bunt base hit in the top of the third by Jay Mitchell (Sr., Canton, Mass.). The bunt started a Princeton rally that would include an RBI base hit by Pat Boran (So., Pottsville, Pa.) and a two-RBI double by Max Krance (Jr., South Nyack, N.Y.). The four-run inning would force the Monarchs to make a pitching change. Ten batters and 45 minutes later, the Tigers had a 5-2 lead. Old Dominion came back with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Princeton threatened to score again in the top of the sixth, but left two runners on base. The Tigers added another run in the eighth inning when Krance's third hit of the day plated Grayson. Mickey Martin (Jr., Bridgewater, N.J.) hit a two-run single to add some extra insurance.
Grayson had three walks and a double on the night and had three runs scored. Boran was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Krance was 3 for 5 with three RBIs.
Quintana left the game after six innings, giving up four hits, three runs, two walks and striking out seven. He had four 1-2-3 innings and retired the last eight batters he faced. Quintana also held ODU's Tim Hummel to an 0 for 3 night. Hummel came into the game batting over .400 as the Monarch's leading hitter. David Boehle (Fr., Redwood, City, Calif.) finished things off for the save, throwing three scoreless innings and striking out three.
