CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Princeton and Virginia met on the baseball field for the 38th time in history this afternoon at the Virginia Baseball Field in the 3,500th game in the history of Princeton baseball. The Tigers lost to the Cavaliers by the score of 11-5.
After walking in the top of the first inning, Pat Boran (So., Pottsville, Pa.) scored on a ground out by Max Krance (Jr., South Nyack, N.Y.) for the early Princeton lead. Boran extended the Princeton lead with a two-run homer in the top of the third inning. His towering fly to left field put the Tigers in front 3-0.
Mark Reuffert cut into the Tiger lead with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning. That was the only run that Princeton starter Tommy Crenshaw (So., Pompano Beach, Calif.) gave up in the first four innings. The Cavaliers scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to draw even with the Tigers. The runs came on an RBI base hit and a wild pitch.
Princeton clawed back with a run in the top of the seventh when Jay Mitchell (Sr., Canton, Mass.) hit a sacrifice fly to score Jon Watterson (Jr., Keene, N.H.).
Virginia scored eight runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on two bunt base hits and a very long home run to left field. In all, Virginia sent 11 batters to the plate and scored all eight runs with two outs in the inning.
Crenshaw pitched five innings and game up only one run with three strikeouts. Jay Tedeman (Sr., Boston, Mass.) threw a third of an inning and gave up eight runs for the loss. Boran was 1-2 with two RBIs on the day and Mitchell was 1-2 with one RBI.
