TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Princeton softball team fell to 3-8 after dropping a pair of close contests to Florida State tonight at the FSU Softball Complex.
Although the scores in both games were close, the games were actually quite different. The first game was a thriller that featured plenty of offense, while the second game was a show of perfection by one dominant pitcher.
The Tigers led the first game 1-0 after Anna Soper drove home Sarah Jane White with a single in the second inning. Florida State immediately got the run back and added two more in the fourth inning. One came on a solo home run by Kelly Miller off Sarah Peterman, who only allowed two earned runs in the 4-3 loss. The Seminoles added another unearned run in the fifth inning and seemed to be cruising to a win.
Princeton, as it has done all season, began to rally in the sixth inning. After Lauren Poniatowski reached on a fielder's choice, Devon Keefe doubled. With two outs, Vicki Siesta doubled to right field, driving in both runs. Brie Galicinao reached on an error, but FSU got out of the inning when Soper grounded out. Lori Volker reached third base in the seventh inning, but Malerich came in to relieve starter Jennifer White-Stokes and struck out Poniatowski to end the game.
That was just a warm-up for Malerich. She retired 21 straight batters to record her first career perfect game in the second half of the doubleheader. Neither starter White nor Brie Galicinao allowed an earned run, but the Seminoles capitalized on a pair of errors for two unearned runs in the 2-0 win.
The Tigers are off tomorrow before opening the FSU Invitational with a 10 a.m. contest against Georgia Southern. Results will be updated on the web site at the completion of the day, but game scores can be heard after each game on the Tiger SportsLine (609-258-3545).
