PRINCETON, N.J. - Harvard has won the last four and seven of the last eight Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming League (EISL) championships. If Harvard wasn't winning, it was Princeton wearing the crown. Either the Tigers or the Crimson has won the title every year since 1973 and since 1983, the two power houses have finished first or second.
This year's meet is shaping up to be no different. The Crimson come in sporting an undefeated record and the only dent in Princeton's loss column came at the hands of Harvard.
The host Tigers have one of their youngest rosters in recent years. Head coach Rob Orr has only eight seniors on the squad and has a talented frshman class of 17. Add that to the sophomores and juniors and this year's team could do some damage this weekend. Princeton is led by a number of people capable of handling the leadership role. Kevin Volz (freestyle) and Nathan Rebuck (freestyle) have been multiple-event winners in several meets this season. Backstroker Andrew Chadeayne and IMer Matt Harrigan have contributed as well. Captain Dan Russell and Christopher Cunningham round out the upperclassmen. Jesse Gage is a telented freshman who has made big strides throughout the season and could make some noise over the weekend. Harvard head coach Tim Murphy brings in a seasoned team to DeNunzio Pool. The Crimson know what it takes to win this meet. Everyone but the freshmen has been on a championship-winning team. Matt Wrenshall won three relay championships last season as a freshman and also won an individual title. Tim Martin is a superstar freestyler and is always a person to watch.
The championship runs Thurdsay through Saturday. The morning, preliminary session begins at 11 a.m and the evening finals session starts at 6 p.m. Tickets are $5 per session or $25 for the weekend and can be purchased at the door. Princeton students receive free admission with a valid ID.
