PRINCETON, N.J. - Eric Voelker (So., Medford, N.J.) hit a two-out RBI double to cap a four-run eighth inning to lead the Princeton baseball team to a come from behind 7-6 win over the UConn Huskies. The Tigers (3-7) stop a five game losing streak with the win.
Princeton jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind the solid pitching by starter Chris Higgins (So., Tulsa, Okla.) on an RBI groundout by Voelker. Max Krance (Jr., South Nyack, N.Y.), who doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a wild pitch, scored on the play. Krance would get an RBI in the fourth inning with a single that scored Pat Boran (So., Pottsville, Pa.). Andrew Hanson (Jr., Cumberland, Maine) scored when Casey Hildreth (Jr., Westfield, Mass.) grounded out to the shortstop. With a 3-0 Princeton lead in the top of the sixth, the Huskies loaded the bases with one out when first baseman Brian Packin sent a Higgins pitch over the left field fence for a grand slam and a 4-3 UConn lead. UConn added two more runs in the top of the seventh with an RBI single by Clarke Caudill and a double steal.
Higgins would leave after the sixth inning, having thrown six complete innings, walking four, striking out two, giving up six hits and four earned runs.
The four-run Princeton eighth began with back-to-back one-out infield singles by Mark Grayson (So., Kingwood, Texas) and Boran. Hanson hit an RBI double to score Grayson forcing UConn to lift its starting pitcher Erik Drown. Peter Soteropulos came in and could not shut the door for the Huskies. He gave up an RBI groundout, and an RBI single to Hildreth. Voelker then hit his double to right field for the final score.
Mark Siano (Fr., Fort Collins, Colo.) pitched a perfect eighth inning for his first career win. David Boehle (Fr., Redwood City, Calif.) earned his third save in as many appearances with a hitless ninth inning.
Krance was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, Hanson was also 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Voelker had a total of two RBIs to go with his 1 for 4 day.
Princeton travels to St. Joseph's for a doubleheader on Saturday and another doubleheader at Delaware on Sunday. Both events start at noon.
