NORRISTOWN, Pa. - Sophomore pitcher Tom Rowland pitched a three-hit shutout for his first win of the season and helped propel the Princeton baseball team (5-7) to a doubleheader sweep of the St. Joseph's Hawks (6-17) this afternoon at Elmwood Park in Norristown, Pa. The Tigers won the first game 3-0 and came from behind to win the night cap 8-6.
Rowland had only three outs go past the infield grass and had 15 ground ball outs to go with one strike out in the day's first game. He did not walk any St. Joe's batters and is now 1-2 on the season. He had a string of nine consecutive batters retired from the first through fourth innings.
Rowland was backed up with the bats by Pat Boran, Andrew Hanson and Jay Mitchell who all had RBIs. Boran was 1 for 3 with a double, Hanson was 2 for 3 and Mitchell was 0 for 2. Tony Dent was 2 for 4 in his first action of the year. Thanks to the pitching by Rowland, Mitchell recorded a Princeton season-high seven assists. David Boehle pitched a perfect seventh inning for his fourth save of the season.
In the day's second game, the Tigers were down 5-2 before rallying for six runs in the final two innings to come away with the 8-6 win.
Freshman Ryan Quillian was tapped for five runs in the first five innings, although only one was earned. Boehle came in the game looking for the save, but earned the win instead. He is now 1-0 on the year.
No Tiger hitter had more than one hit -- the team had only six -- but the hits came when Princeton needed them the most. Buster Small, who was 1 for 4, hit a two-out single to right field that scored two runs in the sixth inning. He had a sacrifice fly in the prior inning for a total of three. Dent collected his first career RBI with a pinch-hit sacrifice fly of his own in the sixth and added another RBI, the game winner, in in the seventh to put the Tigers ahead for good.
