Doubleheader Split Halts Win Streak

NEWARK, Del. - The Princeton baseball team's three-game winning streak came to a screeching halt this afternoon at the University of Delaware. The Tigers fell in the first game of the doubleheader 15-1, but came back to win the second game 6-5.
The Blue Hens (9-8) used a 13-run third inning to cruise to the Game 1 win. Princeton (6-8) could only muster four hits in the game. Delaware second baseman Andrew Salvo hit two home runs in the fateful third inning and had a total of six RBIs. In all 15 batters were sent to the plate in the inning.
Princeton's starting pitcher Tommy Crenshaw (So., Pompano Beach, Fla.) took the loss after pitching 2.1 innings and surrendering nine earned runs. Jay Tedeman (Sr., Boston, Mass.) came on in relief to throw 1.2 innings. He gave up five earned runs and six hits. Sophomore Chris Young (So., Dallas, Texas.) saw his first action of the year after another record-setting basketball season. Young pitched the final two innings, giving up only one hit and striking out one. He also walked one Delaware batter. Max Krance (Jr., South Nyack, N.Y.) had Princeton's only RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly. Ryan Achterberg (So., Corona del Mar, Claif.) was 2 for 3. The second game of the double dip went a little smoother for the Tigers. Senior Jason Quintana (Chester, N.J.) threw a complete game and scattered seven hits for his second win of the season. He struck out five and walked only two.
Princeton jumped out to a 2-0 lead when Andrew Hanson (Jr., Cumberland, Maine) grounded out to score Achterberg and Casey Hildreth (Jr., Westfield, Mass.) reached on an error to score Pat Boran (So., Pottsville, Pa.). Hildreth added an RBI with a ground out of his own in the third as did Mickey Martin (Jr., Bridgewater, N.J.). Jon Watterson (Jr., Keene, N.H.) hit an RBI single to put the Tigers ahead 5-3. Krance posted the game-winning RBI the easy way after being walked with the bases loaded in the sixth inning.
A two-out, RBI double in the Delaware seventh put the tying run on second with two outs for the Blue Hens, but Quintana got the clean-up hitter to fly out to right field for the win.
Achterberg, Boran, Martin and Tim Phillips (Jr., Audubon, Pa.) all had two hits for the Tigers.
Princeton travels to Rutgers on Wednesday before opening its Ivy League season on Saturday with a doubleheader at home against Dartmouth.
