PRINCETON, N.J. - Boston College won the Princeton Invitational today by jumping out to a trio of leads and holding off a final rally by the Princeton Tigers to win 6-4 in the championship game.
Boston College held leads of 1-0, 3-2 and 6-3 before finding itself with a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning after Lauren Poniatowski (Jr., Haddon Heights, N.J.) doubled home Lori Volker (Jr., San Diego, Calif.). Boston College reliever Kimberly Ryan walked Vicki Siesta (Jr., West Milford, N.J.) and Sarah Jane White (So., Winter Park, Fla.) to load the bases before striking out Brie Galicinao (So., Stockton, Calif.) to end the game. Galicinao, who pitched a 1-0 shutout against Boston College yesterday, struggled as the starter today. She pitched 3.2 innings, allowing five runs on nine hits. Only two of the runs were earned, though, as Princeton hurt itself with four errors. Sarah Peterman (Sr., Davis, Calif.), who shut out Temple 2-0 in the Tigers' first win of the day, pitched well in relief. She allowed only one hit over 3.1 innings, although it was a solo home run to Cara Blumfield.
Poniatowski had two hits on the day while five other Tigers had one hit. The Tigers scored two runs in the first inning when Galicinao doubled home Volker and Siesta. They tied the game at 3-3 in the third inning when Poniatowski scored on a sacrifice fly by White.
The Tigers defeated Temple 2-0 to finish undefeated in pool play. The Tigers got their only runs in the fourth inning when Siesta scored on a triple by Galicinao, who went 2-for-2 in the game. Lizzy Callaway (So., Houston, Tx.) drove in Galicinao with an infield single.
Peterman got the win by pitching a complete-game shutout. She allowed two hits and two walks and struck out seven batters.
Princeton will host Rutgers in a doubleheader on Thursday at Class of 1895 Field. The first game will start at 2:30 p.m.
