Tigers Fall to Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Princeton jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead on Rutgers in the first two innings this afternoon, but the Scarlet Knights were the ones that hit the ball harder and farther. Rutgers put a total of 17runs on the board against the Tigers and won the game 17-6 on a cold overcast day at the Class of 1953 Baseball Complex in Piscataway, N.J.
Princeton got its first two runs in the first inning thanks to an RBI sacrifice fly by Max Krance (Jr. South Nyack, N.Y.) and an RBI ground out by Casey Hildreth (Jr., Westfield, Mass.). The Tigers added two more runs on a two-RBI single by Jon Watterson (Jr., Keene, N.H.).
Rutgers came back with five runs in the bottom of the second inning and two more in the bottom of the third inning. A dropped fly ball on a windy day allowed the Scarlet Knights to tally five earned run out of the seven they scored. Rutgers would add another run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Andrew Hanson (Jr., Cumberland, Maine) had one bright spot for the Tigers. He hit a towering home run over the 410 mark in straight-away center field. Krance, who was hit by a pitch in the inning, scored on an RBI single by Buster Small (Sr., Alpharetta, Ga.). At the time, The game was 8-6 and the Tigers looked to be pulling the upset and ending Rutgers' eight-game winning streak. However, an error by Hanson opened the door for a five-run sixth inning by Rutgers to put the game out of reach.
Mickey Martin (Jr., Bridgewater, N.J.) ended the day 3 for 4, Watterson was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, Hanson was also 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored, Small also added a 2 for 4 day.
Chris Higgins went three complete innings and gave up nine hits for seven runs, five of which were earned to fall to 0-2 on the season.
Princeton hosts Dartmouth Saturday morning to open its Ivy League season. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 11:30 am. Princeton's game with Monmouth which was rained out March 21 has been re scheduled for April 6 at 3 pm.
