Today's Note of the Night
Not exactly the finale we'd hoped for -- Coming into the season, Pennsylvania and Princeton were picked to finish 1-2 in the preseason Ivy League media poll. With a win last Saturday, Dartmouth clinched its second consecutive league crown, leaving Penn and Harvard in a battle for second place. Princeton has won five of its last six but can not finish higher than fourth.
Five more notes no media person should be without
History lesson -- This will be the 48th meeting between the Tigers and the Quakers, with Princeton holding a 33-14 advantage in the series. Pennsylvania defeated Princeton 92-82 in the Ivy opener this season at Princeton.
More history -- The two teams split a pair of games last season, each winning on the road. The Tigers have won six of nine against Pennsylvania under head coach Liz Feeley.
About even -- Princeton is averaging 59.9 points per game in league competition, while allowing 59.2 points per game. The Quakers are averaging 75.4 points and giving up 70.5 points in 13 Ivy games.
Climbing the ladder-- Maggie Langlas is on pace to graduate with 1,192 career points. She currently stands in seventh place with 1,181 points. With 11 points at Yale, Langlas surpassed Margaret Meier '78, who tallied 1,165.
Same ladder, different rung-- With 1,157 career points, Kate Thirolf is ninth on the all-time scoring list. Thirolf needs eight points to tie Margaret Meier '78 for eighth place.
Others receiving votes
Rising Reser -- After averaging 2.85 points per game in the first 20 games of the season, sophomore Hillary Reser is averaging 10.0 points per game in the last seven, including a team-high 18 points against Dartmouth. The Tigers are 5-1 in Ivy games that Reser has received the starting nod.
Opening act -- Princeton is 9-5 when it leads at halftime. The Tigers have never come back from a halftime deficit, going 0-13 when trailing at the break. The only time Princeton won the game when it trailed at the half was the preseason exhibition game, in which it outscored Roto Banska 45-20 in the final 20 minutes for the 67-46 final score.
Climbing the (Ca)hill -- Allison Cahill, the only freshman to appear in all 27 games, is third on the team in scoring, averging 6.9 points per game. She has scored in double figures in three straight games, including 11 points on 3 of 3 shooting from the floor against Dartmouth. She leads the team in free-throw shooting, hitting 42 of 47 attempts (.894).
Windex -- The Tigers are 3-15 when they are outrebounded by their opponents this season. Princeton is 6-3 when it holds the advantage on the boards. The Tigers outrebounded Harvard on both occassions this season and lost. The only other time Princeton had more rebounds and lost was the 67-58 loss to Yale at Princeton.
Counting on Kate -- Princeton is 5-3 when Kate Thirolf scores in double figures against league competition. The Tigers are 0-4 in Ivy games that Thirolf does not reach double-digits in scoring. The only league game Princeton won when Thirolf scored single digits was a 55-52 overtime win against Brown. She is averaging 16.3 points over the last three games.
Control freak -- On the season Kate Thirolf's assist-to-turnover ratio is slightly better than 3:2. She leads the team with 60 assists while committing 37 turnovers.
