Williamstown, Mass. - Peter Yik put an exclamation point on one of the great careers in Princeton men's squash history by sweeping through the semifinals and finals to win his second straight individual national championship.
Yik's accomplishment was matched by fellow Princetonian Julia Beaver, a junior who won her second straight title as well.
Yik defeated Trinity's Preston Quick 15-9, 15-7, 15-10 in the semifinals before facing old rival Marcus Cowie of Trinity in the championship. A fellow senior, Cowie had won the national title his freshman and sophomore years before Yik took it away last year.
Cowie jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first game before Yik got hot, rallying to take Game 1 15-14 and then the next two games 15-1, 15-4.
"He was devastating," said Princeton coach Bob Callahan. "It was one of the most dominant performances I've ever seen."
Beaver's day was not quite as easy. In the semifinals against Cornell's Olga Puidgemont-Sola, Beaver found herself down a match ball before rallying to win in five games. She then repeated that with a five-game win over Yale's Laura Keating in the championship round.
"It was a thrilling day," Beaver said. "I'm glad it's over with. I almost lost many times, and it was great to come away with the championship."
