PRINCETON, N.J. - Even though it was April Fool's Day, nobody told the Dartmouth baseball team. The Big Green and the Princeton Tigers opened the 2000 Ivy League baseball campaign this afternoon at Clarke Field. Dartmouth (9-8, 2-0 Ivy) defeated the Tigers (6-11, 0-2 Ivy) by scores of 4-2 in eight innings and 13-4.
Chris Young (So., Dallas, Texas) made his 2000 home debut in Game 1 and did not disappoint. The 6-11 sophomore was on a pitch count and threw four innings. He gave up two hits and struck out seven before being lifted. The Tigers could not hold on to the 1-0 lead that they had when Young left the game. A Mickey Martin (Jr., Bridgewater, N.J.) RBI fielder's choice gave Princeton the early lead. Dartmouth tied the game in the top of the fourth with a Daniel Becker RBI single. Princeton came back in the bottom of the fourth with another fielder's choice RBI by Eric Voelker (So., Medford, N.J.). The Green once again tied the score in the top of the fifth inning on a Michael Levy RBI single to send the game into extra innings. Dartmouth would score two in the top of the eight for the 4-2 win. Mark Siano (Fr., Fort Collins, Colo.) suffered his first loss of the season. He pitched 2.1 innings and gave up two runs. Andrew Hanson (Jr., Cumberland, Maine) and Buster Small (Sr., Alpharetta, Ga.) were both 2 for 4 on the day. Both of Hanson's hits were doubles.
In game two of the double-dip, Dartmouth used two five-run innings to turn the game into a blowout. Princeton got three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning when Pat Boran (So., Pottsville, Pa.) singled in two runs and Max Krance (Jr., South Nyack, N.Y.) hit a sacrifice fly to plate Boran. Boran hit an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning to score Mark Grayson (So., Kingwood, Texas) and make the score 8-4. The Green added its second five-run inning in the top of the eight to put the game away.
Princeton starting pitcher Tom Rowland (So., Lake Bluff, Ill.) threw 4.1 innings but was tapped for six runs to fall to 1-3 on the year. Boran ended the game 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Hanson and Casey Hildreth (Jr., Westfield, Mass.) were also 2 for 4.
Princeton hosts Harvard tomorrow afternoon in a re-match of the last four Ivy League championship series. Harvard has won the last three titles, including last season in three games.
