WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Princeton and Monmouth scored in bunches this afternoon at Monmouth Field in West Long Branch, N.J. The two teams, meeting for the second time in a week, combined for 18 runs and 23 hits. The Hawks took the 10-8 win to advance their record to 12-19, while the Tigers fall to 11-14.
Princeton spotted Monmouth a 6-0 lead in the first two innings before coming back with four runs of its own in the third inning. Tim Phillips (Jr., Audubon, Pa.) and Ryan Achterberg (So., Corona del Mar, Calif.) led off with back-to-back walks before Pat Boran (So., Pottsville, Pa.) singled to load the bases. Andrew Hanson (Jr., Cumberland, Maine) hit a sacrifice fly to score Phillips. Casey Hildreth (Jr., Westfield, Mass.) then hit a two-out double to score two runs. Buster Small (Sr., Alpharetta, Ga.) followed that with a double of his own to score Hildreth. Monmouth extended its lead to 7-4 before Princeton took the lead in the top of the sixth inning. Phillips battled through 11 pitches to earn a bases-loaded walk. Jon Watterson (Jr., Keene, N.H.) singled in Sean McNally (Jr., Jersey City, N.J.) who had earlier doubled. Boran hit into a fielder's choice and Hanson hit a single to score the Tigers' final two runs for the 8-7 lead.
The Hawks lead off the bottom of the seventh inning with a double and a run-scoring single to tie the game at eight. Princeton brought in its closer, David Boehle (Fr., Redwood City, Calif.) in a non-save situation to try and earn the win in the eighth. The rookie got the first two men out with no problem and then gave up a walk followed by a base hit. An intentional walk loaded the bases with two outs. Hawk third baseman Jeff Toth hit a bouncing single through the left side to score the game winning run and an insurance run.
Boran and Max Krance (Jr., South Nyack, N.Y.) were each 2 for 5, Boran had an RBI and a run scored. Small was 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI. Boehle pitched one inning and fell to 1-2 on the season.
Princeton returns to Ivy League play this weekend and travels to Columbia for two Gehrig Division doubleheaders with the Lions.
