Tigers Earn Sweep, Remain Tied for Division Lead

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Princeton baseball team's bats woke up for a total of 25 hits and 21 runs in today's doubleheader sweep of Columbia at Coakley Field in New York City. The Tigers took the first game with no problem by a 13-1 score. Princeton earned a 9-8 win in the second game. The Tigers are now13-14 overall and 6-4 in the Ivy League.
In Game 1, Chris Young (So., Dallas, Texas) threw a complete game and scattered four hits. The 6-11 fast-baller struck out eight and walked two. The two teams exchanged runs in the first inning before the Princeton bats broke out for six runs in the top of the third. Pat Boran (So., Pottsville, Pa.) hit his second home run of the year to straight-away centerfield and Eric Voelker (So., Medford, N.J) hit his first career home run. Both were two-run shots. Max Krance (Jr., South Nyack, N.Y.) hit a sacrifice fly and Buster Small (Sr., Alpharetta, Ga.) reached on an error and scored. In the sixth inning, Krance hit an RBI double and small plated two teammates with a single to centerfield. Mickey Martin (Jr., Bridgewater, N.J.) hit his first home run of the year for Princeton's final run.
Boran ended the day 3 for 5 with three runs and two RBIs, Casey Hildreth (Jr., Westfield, Mass.) was 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI.
Game two was close throughout, with Columbia taking leads of 2-1, 3-2 and 4-2. The game was tied at 7-7 after the sixth inning.
With Columbia ahead 4-2 in the sixth inning, Princeton put five runs on the board, four coming with two outs. Three of the runs came on a towering three-run home run that landed in the Harlem River over the right field fence.
Columbia tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on a three-run home run of its own. Princeton added two runs in the eighth when Boran and Andrew Hanson (Jr., Cumberland, Maine) led of with back-to-back singles and Krance followed with an RBI double to score Boran. Ryan Achterberg (So., Corona del Mar, Calif.) would get credit for the game winning RBI on a sacrifice fly to right field to score Hanson. Columbia scored an unearned run in the bottom of the eight for the final 9-8 score.
Chris Higgins (So, Tulsa, Okla.) pitched 1.1 innings for his first career win. David Boehle (Fr., Redwood City, Calif.) also pitched 1.1 innings, struck out two and earned his sixth save of the season. He is now one save away of tying the Princeton season record.
Krance was 4 for 5 with 5 RBIs and Boran was 3 for 6 with three runs and an RBI.
The Tigers and Lions battle again with tomorrow afternoon at noon in New York.
