Jackson, N.J. - A brilliant second round and a freshman who played with the nerves of a senior led the Princeton men's golf team to its 14th Ivy League championship Sunday at Metedeconk National Golf Course, although its the first in the past five years for the Tigers.
Princeton shot a three-round total of 895, giving it a nine-stroke advantage over second-place Pennsylvania. The Tigers trailed the Quakers by three strokes after the first round, but shot a tournament-low 289 in the second round to claim the lead. The Tigers finished the tournament with a third-round total of 302, the lowest score of any team in the final round.
Nat Hoopes (Fr., Marion, Mass.) led the way, winning the individual title with a three-round total of 219 (71-71-77). He held a two-stroke advantage over Penn's Chad Perman and a four-stroke advantage over teammate Judd Pritchard (Sr., Fort Worth, Tx.), who shot a 223 (73-75-75). Those two Tigers, along with fifth-place James Milam (So., Idaho Falls, Id.), who shot a 225 (79-71-75), were all named first-team all-Ivy. No other team had three golfers named first-team All-Ivy. Princeton hasn't had one player named first-team All-Ivy in the past two years.
Princeton's other two scorers were Cassidy Traub (Fr., Long Beach, Calif.), who shot a 230 (81-72-77), and Peter McWhorter (Jr., Greenwich, Conn.), who shot a 231 (81-75-75).
