A two-team race between Princeton and Harvard came down to the wire at famed Baltusrol Golf Club, but the Tigers came up one shot short of an Ivy League championship as their +11 was just edged out by Harvard's +10 in a memorable finish.
After entering the final day ahead by one stroke, Princeton was -2 as a team in the final round while the Crimson were -4.
Reed Greyserman shot a bogey-free 69 (-3) in the final round to finish tied for first place at -4 overall. He would go on to a playoff against Harvard's Barry Zhang, but lost on the first hole of sudden death.
Riccardo Fantinelli was even par after two rounds and shot a 69 (-3) in the final round to finish one shot out of the playoff. After opening with an eagle on 1 for the second time in the tournament, Fantinelli played the next two holes +3 and was ultimately one-over after the opening nine. He found his form over the back nine, carding four birdies with no bogeys to race back into contention -- including birdies on 17 and 18.
Greyserman and Fantinelli were a combined -5 on the back nine, and as a team Princeton was -7 on the back nine on Sunday. Tommy Frist birdied 15 and 17 on his way in, two of his five birdies in the final round, while Eric Zhao's birdie on 12 was his only non-par of the back nine.
Harvard led as a team after the first round, shooting -2 while Princeton was +6. On a soggy Saturday, the Tigers were able to navigate the elements best with a team score of +7 which was five shots better than Columbia's +12 and nine ahead of Harvard's +16 to set the stage for Sunday's final round.
Greyserman and Zhang were in the final group, and both the team and individual results hung in the balance as they came up the par-5 18th hole. With Princeton trailing by one in the team race and the two players tied at -4, the stage was set as each player attempted to reach the green in two and set up an eagle opportunity. Instead, each player had their second shots land in the left bunker and the resulting wedges left a considerable distance for birdie. Neither player was able to make the birdie putt and each then made their par putts -- Greyserman first from about 15 feet which assured him of at least a tie for first individually but would require a miss from Zhang to secure the individual win and then bring the team total all square. Zhang calmly made his shorter par putt which clinched the team win for the Crimson and sent the two players off to a playoff for the solo title.
Playing the first hole, Zhang found the fairway off the tee while Greyserman found trouble with the trees down the left side and could not pull off a miracle to extend the playoff.
