PRINCETON, N.J. - After being delayed by two days by rain, the Princeton baseball team finally got its chance to extend a one-game lead over Penn in the Gehrig Division of the Ivy League. The Tigers did not waste those chances, putting up a 5-4 win in the first game and a 12-5 win in the second game. Princeton (17-14, 10-4 Ivy League) now holds a three-game advantage over the Quakers (18-16, 7-7 Ivy League) and also holds a six-game winning streak.
In Game 1, starting pitcher Ryan Quillian (Fr., Atlanta, Ga.) continued his winning ways. Quillian, who posted a complete game, seven strikeout win last weekend at Columbia, threw six-plus innings today, struck out eight and did not walk anyone for his fourth win of the season.
Quillian did however, spot Penn a 3-0 lead in the first two innings before Princeton could get on the scoreboard. Mickey Martin (Jr., Bridgewater, N.J.) hit the first of five triples on the day for Princeton in the second inning. He was knocked in by Jay Mitchell (Sr., Canton, Mass.) on an RBI bunt. Princeton would add another run in the third when Max Krance (Jr., South Nyack, N.Y.) singled to right field to score Jon Watterson (Jr., Keene, N.H.). Mitchell posted another RBI in the fourth inning as did Watterson. The game was tied 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth when Eric Voekler (So., Medford, N.J.) hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Andrew Hanson (Jr., Cumberland, Maine) for the game-winning run. David Boehle (Fr., Redwood, City, Calif.) shut the door in the top of the seventh for his seventh save of the season. Boehle struck out one and is now tied for the school record for saves in a season. Mitchell ended the game 2 for 3 with two RBIs, Martin and Krance were also 2 for 3.
Game 2 saw the Tigers jump out to an early lead and hold on for the 12-5 win. Princeton scored single runs in the first and third innings and two in the fourth inning before breaking out for five runs in the fifth. With one out in the inning, Hanson was hit on the hand by a pitch. He was then tripled in by Krance who also scored on a triple by Casey Hildreth (Jr., Westfield, Mass.). Buster Small (Sr., Alpharetta, Ga.) singled through the left side to score Hildreth. Martin doubled in Small and advanced to third on the throw home. He would later score on a wild pitch. Princeton would add three more runs in the final three innings.
Jason Quintana (Sr., Chester, N.J.) threw eight innings for his fourth win of the season. Quintana gave up three earned runs, struck out nine and walked no Quaker batters. Martin was 2 for 5 with a double, a triple, a run and an RBI. Watterson was also 2 for 5 with two runs.
