HANOVER, N.H. - A weekend that was filled with so much promise ended a day late and short on joy.
With doubleheaders scheduled at Dartmouth and Harvard, the Princeton softball team knew that four wins would clinch at least a share of its 13th Ivy League championship. Rain eliminated the doubleheader at Harvard, but Dartmouth may have eliminated any hopes for Princeton. The Big Green rallied Friday for a 9-7 win, thier first ever against Princeton, and shut out the Tigers 6-0 on Sunday after a 48-hour rain delay.
Mathematically, Princeton can still get into a postseason playoff for the league title, but it would take two wins at Harvard and quite a bit of help from other teams. The Tigers are 6-4 in the league while Harvard is 5-0 and Dartmouth is 4-2.
The weekend got off to a good start Friday when Princeton jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but Dartmouth rallied for three runs in the second inning to even the score. The two teams traded rallies, but Dartmouth had the last laugh with a two-run sixth inning to take the final 9-7 lead. Lauren Poniatowski, Brie Galicinao and Kim Veenstra each had two hits for the Tigers, while Veenstra added three RBIs. Rain postponed the doubleheader until Sunday afternoon, which featured significantly less offense than the earlier game. In fact, Princeton and Dartmouth combined for 12 scoreless half-innings, unfortunately for the Tigers, seven belonged to them. The only inning that produced runs was Dartmouth's third, when six runs were put on the scoreboard.
Mackenzie Forsythe, playing her first game at the No. 2 spot, went 2-for-2 for Princeton's only multiple-hit game. The Tigers will play again Thursday afternoon at Villanova.
