PRINCETON, N.J. - With more than a dozen radar guns of Major League scouts pointed at him on Monday afternoon, Chris Young (So., Dallas, Texas) calmly struck out 10 Penn batters, gave up no earned runs, only three hits and walked two for his third straight win. For his efforts, Young was named the Ivy League Pitcher of the week for the first time in this season.
The 6-11, 255-pound righthander tied a career high with the 10 punch-outs. This was the third time in his career that he has achieved the mark and the second time this season.
Young led the Tigers to a 7-1 win over Penn to put Princeton within one win from clinching its fifth consecutive Gehrig Division championship. Princeton (19-14, 12-4 Ivy League) travels to Cornell for a doubleheader with the Big Red on Friday and returns home to host Cornell on Sunday. The Red trails Princeton by four games in the division standings.
For the season, Young now has a perfect 3-0 record and a microscopic 0.67 ERA. He has posted 36 strikeouts to only eight walks in 27 innings. Opposing batters are hitting .120 against him. Young is six innings shy of qualifying for the NCAA leaders in ERA rankings. If he had those six extra innings, he would be leading the country by 0.74. The current NCAA leader has a 1.41 ERA.
