VILLANOVA, Pa. - After struggling through 15 consecutive scoreless innings, Lori Volker's run on a single to centerfield by Devon Keefe seemed more of a relief than a game-winner.
It was both.
After losing game one of Thursday's doubleheader at Villanova 3-0, the Princeton Tigers won their 18th game of the season with a one-hit 1-0 shutout in the second game. Sarah Jane White notched her first career victory by tossing four no-hit innings while Brie Galicinao pitched three innings of one-hit ball to record the save.
Lauren Poniatowski and Kim Veenstra were the only Tigers to record hits in the opening game. Villanova starter Carrie Walpole didn't allow a hit over the final five innings to record the win. The Wildcats scored all of their runs in the second inning off starter Dana Freiser, with the key hit being a two-run double by Regina Speicher. Freiser and reliever Sarah Peterman combined to allow seven hits over six innings, but neither received any offensive support. The Tigers were quick to change that for the second game. Volker led off with a single to centerfield. Assuming Mackenzie Forsythe would bunt, Villanova moved the infield up. Instead, the freshman with the .405 batting average over her last 15 games hit a sharp single past the third baseman. A perfect bunt by Poniatowski moved the runners up for Keefe, who scored Volker with a single.
Villanova did well to get out of the inning with only a 1-0 deficit, but it couldn't solve White for four innings. Four Wildcats got on base four different ways, none of which were a hit (error, walk, hit by pitch and fielder's choice). Most importantly, none scored the tying run. Galicinao also pitched well, allowing only one hit and no runs in the final three innings. Princeton managed seven hits in the win, including two apiece by Volker, Keefe and Vicki Siesta.
The Tigers will host Robert Morris at noon on Saturday before traveling to Harvard for their final league doubleheader Sunday at noon.
