PRINCETON, N.J. - Thanks to a six hits, two walks and an error, Princeton junior Jon Watterson (Keene, N.H.) upped his batting average from .324 to .395 this afternoon in the Princeton baseball team's doubleheader split against Harvard. Harvard won the first game 6-3 in nine innings and Princeton took the second game 12-3. With the split, the Crimson is now 8-11 overall and 3-1 in the Ivy League, while Princeton is 7-12 overall and 1-3 in league play.
Both teams exchanged a pair of runs in the first inning of Game 1 and Harvard took the lead on a Jeff Bridich RBI single to left field. Harvard starter Ben Crockett cruised to the seventh inning and came within one strike of putting the Tigers away. Pinch hitter Tony Dent (So., Denville, N.J.) bounced a 2-2 pitch through the right side to keep the Tigers alive. Tim Phillips (Jr., Audubon, Pa.) followed that with a hit of his own to advance Dent to second. Watterson then singled in the tying run. Two Princeton errors in the top of the ninth inning allowed Harvard to score the deciding runs. Ryan Quillian (Fr., Atlanta, Ga.) pitched six innings and gave up 10 hits and two earned runs. David Boehle (Fr., Redwood City, Calif.) suffered his first defeat of the season after throwing three innings and allowing three runs. Watterson was 4 for 5 in the game with an RBI and a run. He was the only Tiger with more than one hit.
Game two went much more the Tigers' way. Princeton belted 16 hits and dented the scoreboard in the first six innings. Max Krance (Jr., South Nyack, N.Y.), Casey Hildreth (Jr., Westfield, Mass.) and Jay Mitchell (Sr., Canton, Mass.) each had doubles to lead the way for the Tigers. Hildreth had two RBIs on the day as did Mitchell.
Princeton forced Harvard to use five pitchers, while Jason Quintana (Sr., Chester, N.J.) pitched eight complete innings giving up nine hits, three runs and striking out six. Hildreth had a 3 for 5 second game as did Krance. Watterson was 2 for 4 with two walks and also reached on an error.
Princeton faces cross-county rival Rider on Tuesday before hosting Monmouth in a make-up game on Thursday afternoon at 3 pm.
