PRINCETON, N.J. - The Princeton baseball team clinched its fifth straight Gehrig Division championship with a win in today's first game against Cornell (13-24, 11-9 Ivy), but a ninth inning Tiger rally fell short in the second game. Princeton (21-17, 13-7 Ivy) took Game 1 by a 7-4 score and lost the second game 11-10.
Chris Young (So., Dallas, Texas) pitched a complete game for his fourth win of the season in Game 1. The 6-11 righthander gave up eight hits and two earned runs while striking out eight and walking nobody. He held the Big Red scoreless for 5.2 innings before giving up a run. Princeton surrendered three runs--two unearned-- in the bottom of the seventh.
Princeton scored its first run in the bottom of the opening frame when Jon Watterson (Jr., Keene, N.H.) scored on a double play ball by Max Krance (Jr., South Nyack, N.Y.). The Tigers added two more runs in the second inning when Tim Phillips (Jr., Audubon, Pa.) doubled to score Eric Voelker (So., Medford, N.J.). Watterson added a sacrifice fly to score Ryan Achterberg (So., Corona del Mar, Calif.). The game remained 3-0 until the bottom of the fourth. Mickey Martin (Jr., Bridgewater, N.J.) led off with a single and Voelker followed that with a single of his own to advance Martin to third. Martin would score two pitches later on a wild pitch. With Voelker on second, Achterberg singled up the middle for the Tigers' fifth run of the day. Watterson singled to move Achterberg into scoring position and Pat Boran (So., Pottsville, Pa.) hit a single to make the game 6-0. Phillips added Princeton's final run of the game when he scored on another Boran single. Phillips committed an error while attempting the double play that could have ended the game in the top of the seventh. His error opened the door for three Big Red runs. Third baseman Raul Gomez would eventually end the game with a double play ball.
Boran, Voelker and Achterberg each had three hits for the Tigers. Boran had two RBIs and Voelker and Achterberg each scored two runs apiece.
Game 2 saw the Tigers fall behind 1-0 in the first inning only to go ahead in the bottom of the first with a three-run inning. Cornell extended its lead to 8-3 before the Tigers' Sean McNally (Jr., Jersey City, N.J.) singled in Martin and Jay Mitchell (Sr., Canton, Mass.) singled in McNally in the fourth inning.
After Cornell got a run in the seventh inning, John Osgood homered to straight away centerfield in the eighth and Jordan Schaeffer hit one out in the ninth. McNally posted an RBI ground out in the bottom of the eighth. Achterberg crossed the plate with an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth before Krance hit a three-run homer to make the score 11-10 in favor of the Big Red. Martin doubled and McNally walked before Watterson struck out to end the game with men on first and second.
McNally ended the game 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Boran and Achterberg were each 2 for 5 as was Krance who added four RBIs. Tom Rowland (So., Lake Bluff, Ill.) threw six innings, gave up eight runs and fell to 2-4.
With the win in Game 1, Princeton earns the right to play Dartmouth in the best-of-three Ivy League championship series next weekend. All three games will be played at Princeton, a doubleheader at noon on Saturday and a single game on Sunday if necessary. All games will be nine innings.
