Box Score
PRINCETON, N.J. - In the eighth inning of today's game between Princeton and Monmouth, junior Casey Hildreth (Westfield, Mass.) took the mound for the first time in since high school. The score was 4-3 Princeton. He gave up one run. He came up to the plate in the bottom of the eighth men on first and second and nobody out. He hit the game-winning RBI single, advanced to second on the throw home and advanced to third on a throwing error from the outfield. All-in-all, not a bad day for a player that is normally a catcher.
The Tiger baseball team defeated the Monmouth Hawks 7-4 this afternoon at Clarke Field to move to 8-12 on the season, while Monmouth falls to 4-16.
The Tigers pulled out in front of the Hawks in the bottom of the third with an RBI single by Tim Phillips (Jr., Audubon, Pa.) who knocked in Mickey Martin (Jr., Bridgewater, N.J.) who had earlier doubled. Monmouth came back with two runs in the top of the fourth when Paul Grasso singled to right center to score leadoff hitter Greg Landis. A Jeff Toth groundout to score Brian Moyer put the Hawks ahead 2-1. In the bottom of the sixth, Princeton got leadoff hits by Jon Watterson (Jr., Keene, N.H.) and Pat Boran (So., Pottsville, Pa.). Andrew Hanson (Jr., Cumberland, Maine) followed that with a bases-clearing double over the left fielder's head. Hanson would score one batter later when Max Krance (Jr., South Nyack, N.Y.) hit a double of his own.
Monmouth came back with a Brian Collins RBI single in the seventh and a Mike Thompson RBI single in the eighth inning. Princeton took the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth inning on Hildreth's heroics with the bat. Buster Small (Sr., Alpharetta, Ga.) hit an RBI double to score Hildreth for the final 7-4 score.
Hildreth's final line was one inning pitch, two hits, one run, one strike out and a win. He was also 1 for 4 at the plate with the game-winning RBI and a run scored. Watterson, Boran, Hanson and Martin were all 2 for 4 on the day. Hanson had two RBIs and two runs. David Boehle (Fr., Redwood City, Calif.) pitched a perfect ninth inning for his fifth save of the season. Princeton used five pitchers in the game and all were effective, throwing 15 ground-ball outs. Boran had eight assists as Princeton turned three double plays.
