Softball Ends Season On A High Note, Sweeping Maryland

PRINCETON, N.J. - Sarah Peterman (Sr., Davis, Calif.) ended her career in stellar fashion today, leading the Princeton University softball team to a pair of victories over Maryland on the season's final day. Peterman, who pitched a complete-game 1-0 shutout of the Terrapins to open today's doubleheader, ends her career with three consecutive double-digit win seasons. The Tigers won the second game 5-4.
Maryland's opening-game starter, Danielle Carpenter, also pitched a fine game, but her throwing error in the second inning allowed Sarah Jane White (So., Winter Park, Fla.) to score the game's only run. White reached with a single, stole second and moved to third on a single by Kim Veenstra (So., Hawthorne, Pa.). With one out, Vicki Siesta (Jr., W. Milford, N.J.) hit a grounder back to Carpenter, who overthrew the base for an error. Maryland had only two hits in the game, but sent the go-ahead runner to the plate in the seventh inning. After Holly Baldwin walked, pinch-hitter Janet Richmond hit a groundball that was fielded by Veenstra at shortstop, who started a game-ending double play. Peterman won her 10th game of the season with a two-hit, three-strikeout performance.
After the Terrapins jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the second game, Princeton immediately answered back with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Lori Volker (Jr., San Diego, Calif.) and Mackenzie Forsythe (Fr., Lake Oswego, Ore.) scored on pitcher Amanda Bettker's throwing error. Siesta scored a run in the second and White and Brie Galicinao (So., Stockton, Calif.) scored on a double by Veenstra in the third inning.
Galicinao recorded the win, allowing four hits and two earned runs over five innings. Sarah Jane White recorded the save by inducing Beth Radford to fly out with two runners on in the seventh inning to end the game.
Princeton ends its season with a 23-25 record.
