PRINCETON, N.J. - The Princeton baseball team's trio of Andrew Hanson (Jr., Cumberland, Maine), Chris Young (So., Dallas, Texas) and David Boehle (Fr., Redwood City, Calif.) swept the Ivy League's weekly awards this afternoon. Last weekend, the Tigers swept the best-of-three Ivy League championship series at Clarke Field from Dartmouth by scores of 5-2 and 4-3. By winning its first Ivy League crown since 1996, Princeton earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
Hanson won the Player of the Week award with a 5 for 14 week, two runs, two RBIs and two doubles. Hanson got the Tigers on the board against Dartmouth ace Conor Brooks in Game 2 of the championship series with a two-RBI double on a 0-1 count. With runners at second and third and two outs on the board, he drove a Brooks fast ball down the rightfield line for the scores. Hanson went 3 for 4 --all singles -- in Game 1. He scored two runs in a non-conference win at Rider and made several key plays in the field in the championship series. Young kept his perfect record intact with a masterful performance in the first game of the championship series, throwing a complete game with four hits, two runs, one earned run, three walks and seven strikeouts. Young struck out at least seven batters for the sixth consecutive appearance and held a powerful Dartmouth lineup to only four hits. The Big Green came into the game averaging seven runs per game and scored only two on Young. His ERA is now 1.05 and now has enough innings to qualify for the national ERA rankings. He'll debut on the list at No. 1.
Boehle had probably the toughest two innings in his young career as he earned his ninth save of the season by throwing 1.2 innings in the series-clinching game of the series. The freshman entered the game with the tying run on second with one out in the top of the eighth inning before getting a groud out and s strike out to end the threat. After walking a batter to lead off the ninth, Boehle calmly made a play on a sacrifice bunt and got the next batter to fly to center. He then struck out the final batter on a change up to end the game. With the save, Boehle extends the school record for saves in a season.
Princeton will hear of its fate on May 22, the date the NCAA makes public its first-round parirings.
