Box Score
Easton, Pa. - With its No. 1 quarterback hurt and its No. 2 quarterback ineffective, Lafayette had Princeton right where it wanted.
Marko Glavic, a 6' 6" Canadian freshman who wasn't even listed on the Leopard depth chart, came off the bench to throw for 243 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winning score with two seconds remaining, to lead Lafayette to a thrilling 24-17 win over Princeton in front of 8,013 at Fisher Field.
Glavic's performance spoiled the head coaching debut of Princeton's Roger Hughes and gave Lafayette head coach Frank Tavani his first career win.
Glavic, playing the final series of the first half and the entire second half, completed 18 of 30 passes after relieving Harry Armstrong, who was 9 of 22 for 67 yards and two interceptions. Glavic threw one long touchdown pass and then guided the Leopards on two long fourth-quarter scoring drives, the second one after Princeton had tied it wih a long march of its own. Chris Roser-Jones opened the scoring by returning an interception 33 yards for a TD with 5:15 gone in the game. Lafayette's Martin Brecht kicked a 27-yard field goal early in the second quarter, and the game stayed 7-3 at intermission. Glavic hooked up with Andrew May for a 66-yard touchdown with 8:02 to play in the third quarter, giving the 'Pards their first lead of the day and setting the stage for a wild fourth quarter.
Princeton tied the score on a 37-yard Taylor Northrop field goal, but Lafayette took the ensuing kickoff and went 87 yards in 11 plays covering 4:13. The touchdown came on a 32-yard run by Bill Stocker.
Down 17-10 with 5:01 to go, Princeton answered with a dramatic 14-play, 86-yard drive of its own. Tommy Crenshaw converted two third downs and a big fourth down with a pass to Nate Lindell to keep the drive going, and Crenshaw then hurled himself into the end zone for the tying score.
Unfortunately for the Tigers, there were still 45 seconds remaining on the clock. Northrop's kickoff went through the end zone, but Lafayette did not play for overtime. Instead, on a third down play, Glavic threw 55 yards to Phil Yarberough down to the Princeton 15. Well within field goal range, Lafayette moved to the two-yard line on a run by Stocker and then spent its final timeout with seven seconds to go.
Instead of the sure field goal, Glavic then threw the winning touchdown pass to Yarberough on a fade pattern in the right corner.
Princeon plays its home opener next Saturday night (7 p.m.) against Lehigh.
