Princeton, N.J. - The Princeton University men's tennis team played host to Virginia, Rutgers, Yale, St. John's, N.C. State, Dartmouth and Columbia in the first day of the Farnsworth Invitational on Friday Jan. 26. Kliegerman, who came into the Farnsworth Invitational as the fourth seed, defeated Rutgers' Joey Muscatiello (ill) and beat teammate Daniel Friedman 6-4, 6-2 in the second round. The No. 1 seed, Virginia's Brian Vahaly, beat Princeton's Joe Darren 6-0, 6-0 in the first match of the day, and defeated Princeton's Tim Kofol 6-2, 6-1 in the second round. Vahaly would play Kliegerman in the semifinal round if both players can win their respective quarterfinal matches tomorrow.
Smith, who is the other Princetonian that advanced to the quarterfinals of the singles competition on Friday, will face St. John's Erik Scharf tomorrow. Sharf, the No. 1 player for the Red Storm, had to go to a tie-breaker in the first set of his win over Princeton's Brian Natchtigall in the first round. Tiger tennis player Hendrick Chasse defeated Columbia's Mickey Kaplan in three hard-fought contests, but was defeated by Columbia's Oscar Chow in the round of 16. Unfortunately, Princeton's Will Parlett lost his first-round match to Dartmouth's Jesse Paer 6-4, 6-1. Princeton's Nick Benjamin moved on to the round of 16 with a win over Yale's Ben Woodhouse, but failed to qualify for the quarterfinals, as he lost to Virginia's Huntley Montgomery.
Kyle Kliegerman and John Portlock, the No. 2-seeded team in the doubles competition, defeated a tandem from Yale 8-1, and will play Jesse Paer and Neil Bobba from Dartmouth in the quarterfinals tomorrow. Also, Princeton's Judson Willams and Daniel Friedman won their first-round match, and have the unenviable task of facing the No. 1-seeded team of Huntley Montgomery and Brian Vahaly from Virginia.
