Princeton, N.J. - Elizabeth Jarchow slipped the ball past a sliding Catherine Glenn (Sr. Jacksonville, Fla.) to put the Bulldogs of Yale up 1-0 in the 43 minute of the match. Despite second-half pressure from the Tigers, Yale was able to hold on to the lead and secure the 1-0 victory. Princeton slips to 13-2-2 on the season, 5-1-1 against league opponents. Yale improves to 7-8-2, 2-3-2 against Ivy opponents.
Princeton out shot the Bulldogs, 17-6 yet it was Yale's third shot of the evening that was the deciding factor in the match. On a trough-ball played into the Princeton box by Yale's Ritha Belzaire, Jarchow beat Glenn to the ball and touched it into the net for the goal. Jarchow's goal is only the fourth goal that the Tigers have allowed in league play. The Tigers had their chances in the match. Early in the second half, Rochelle Willis (Fr., Unionville, Ont.) headed the ball towards the upper left corner of Yale's goal. Lindsay Sabel, the Bulldog goalie managed to get her hand on the ball as it bounced off the cross bar and out of the net. Lead by Esmeralda Negron (Fr. Harrington Park, N.J.), who registered five shots in the match, Princeton relentlessly pressured the Yale defense in the second-half but the bulldogs held strong. Sabel finished the game with 10 saves.
"To Yale's credit, they played a great game," said head coach Julie Shackford. "We didn't play as well as we could have, but we still have games to get ready for and work towards to."
Princeton has secured the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament and will find out on Monday, November 12 at 3:00 p.m. when seedings are announced when and where they will compete in the opening round. With tonight's loss to Yale, Princeton will share the Ivy crown with Penn and Dartmouth, all of which have 5-1-1 Ivy records. Princeton was given the automatic bid because they had defeated Dartmouth earlier in the season, 1-0.
In front of the largest crowd on hand this season, seniors Jessica Collins, Catherine Glenn, Linley Gober and Elizabeth Patrick, played their final games on Lourie-Love field. In a pre-game ceremony, these athletes were honored by their fans, coaches and fellow teammates for the contributions that they have all made to the program throughout their careers.
