The Richard Barron era officially begins on Friday, November 16 when the Princeton women's basketball team opens the 2001-02 season with Lehigh at Jadwin Gym. The Tigers, 2-25 a year ago, face Lehigh for the third consecutive season opener.
Barron, who comes from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn., returns nine players from last year's squad, including leading scorer Maureen Lane. Lane finished 2000-01 with a scoring average of 14.3 points per game. Princeton's lone senior, Lauren Rigney, led the team in assists (55) and steals (23) a year ago.
Princeton was picked eighth in the Ivy League preseason poll with 30 total points. The Tigers are young with 7 of 11 players either freshmen or sophomores. Lehigh has four juniors, four sophomores and four freshmen on its 12-man roster.
The Tigers and Mountain Hawks have met 14 previous times and Princeton leads the series 9-5. In last season's opener against Lehigh, Allison Cahill scored 11 points for Princeton in a 64-38 loss. The last time Princeton won its season-opener was in 1995 when it defeated Northern Illinois 74-64.
Friday night's game has a 7 p.m. tipoff tip-off and can be heard live on Princeton's official athletic Web site, www.GoPrincetonTigers.com.
