Women's Soccer Advances in NCAA Tournament with a 3-1 Victory Over Loyola

Princeton, N.J. - Janine Willis (Fr., Unionville, Ont.) scored at 5:44 to give the Tigers and early lead as they went on to defeat the Greyhounds of Loyola 3-1 in the opening round of the 2001 NCAA Women's College Cup. This is the first tournament victory for Princeton since 1982 and matches the Tigers against the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers in the second round game to be held on Sunday, November 18 on Lourie-Love Field at 1:00 p.m.
Willis headed a cross from Joan Cundey (Jr., Bay Village, Ohio) past the out stretched arms of Danielle Ruppel, the Greyhound keeper in the opening minutes of the match for her fourth goal of the season. Esmeralda Negron (Fr., Harrington Park, N.J.) put the Tigers up 2-0 at 11:55 when she scored on a ball from Linley Gober (Sr., Atlanta, Ga.). Krista Ariss (Jr., Burlington, Ont.) scored the final Princeton goal of the evening when from the left side, she hit a far post shot past Ruppel. Cundey was credited with the assist. Loyola put a mark on the score board at 40:28 when Sarah Raab found Jeanetta McGettigan on the far-side of the box.
Princeton keeper, Catherine Glenn (Sr. Jacksonville, Fla.) registered three saves in the match, Ruppel tallied 10 saves.
Princeton will face the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers in the second round match on Sunday, November 18 at 1:00 p.m. Rutgers advances in the tournament as they defeated the Terriers of Boston University 4-1, scoring three goals in less then 2 minutes late in the second half. Princeton and Rutgers faced each other earlier in the season on October 2. The Tigers defeated the Scarlet Knights 2-1 on a second-half goal by Liz Patrick (Sr. Oakton, Va.)
