Princeton, N.J. - Richard Barron is off to a running start as Princeton University's head women's basketball coach and looks to keep the 3-1 Tigers rolling this Saturday at Delaware. Barron, who inherited a team that went 2-25 last season, has passed early season tests with a run-and-gun team that is averaging 74.8 points per game.
Delaware comes into Saturday's game with a 2-1 record and a 13-5 edge in the all-time series. The Blue Hens have won the last three meetings and defeated Princeton 66-47 last year. Delaware has a combined record of 47-13 over the past two seasons and has a No. 28 RPI rating this season.
Princeton's new offense has produced two 80-point games this year with a total team effort. Senior Lauren Rigney was named to the Seattle Times Husky Classic All-Tournament Team after averaging 18 points and seven rebounds in two tournament games last weekend. Freshman Karen Bolster notched a Princeton record 24 points in her debut. No other women has scored more in her first game and only Bill Bradley has scored more with his 27-point debut in 1962.
Junior Allison Cahill registered a career-high seven assists against St. Francis while junior Lauren Goldbeck and sophomores Jessica Aitken, Maureen McCracken, Mary Cate Opila, Eileen Powers and Kelly Schaeffer have all posted personal-best scoring performances this season. The Princeton bench has outscored its opponents benches in each of the Tigers' three victories by a 77-51 margin. When the Tigers score 70 points or more they are 3-0, however, when they fail to do so they are 0-1.
The last time Princeton defeated Delaware was in 1995. The Tigers won 62-45 at Delaware. Coincidentaly, the 1995-96 Tigers were also 3-1 heading into the Delaware contest. It was the last time Princeton began a season at 3-1.
