Princeton Drops Both Doubleheader Games To UNC-Wilmington

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Princeton lost both games of the doubleheader with UNC-Wilmington (18-8) Wednesday night. Princeton (3-8) lost the first game 8-4 and the second game 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth in extra innings. The Tigers played two seven-inning games after Tuesday's game was rained out.
Jon Watterson hit his first home run of the season on an 0-0 pitch over the left field wall to tie the second game 2-2 in the fifth inning. Max Krance reached on a walk, advanced to second on a base hit to left center by Tim Lahey and scored on a passed ball to give Princeton the 3-2 lead. Pat Boran scored the Tigers' first run of the game when he reached on a stand up double, stole third and scored on a fielding error.
Bill Broome intentionally walked the batter to load the bases in the bottom of the eighth, but a single to left scored the Seahawks' winning run. Broome (0-1) gave up two runs on six hits and struck out two in 3.2 innings pitched for the loss. In the first game, Krance hit a single down the right field line to score Watterson and Boran in the first inning. Andrew Hanson ended the inning with an unassisted double play after the Seahawks scored two runs on one hit.
Krance doubled in Boran who reached on an error and Casey Hildreth singled in Krance in the third inning to make it 4-2 Princeton. Krance went 2-for-4 with three RBIs in the first game. Princeton reliever Mark Siano (1-1) gave up four runs on three hits in the sixth inning for the loss in game one.
Reliever Brian Whitaker (5-0) allowed no runs and no hits and stuck out three in the first game and allowed no runs on one hit with one strike out in game two to earn both Wilmington wins.
Princeton will begin a three-game series on March 22 at Duke at 3:00 p.m.
