DURHAM, N.C. - The Princeton baseball team (4-8) snapped a four-game losing streak with an 8-5 win against Duke on Thursday. Ryan Quillian (2-0) gave up four runs on nine hits and struck out four over 7.0 innings pitched for the win. Casey Hildreth pitched the bottom of the ninth for his first career save.
Jon Watterson led off the first inning with a base hit, stole second and was singled in by Andrew Hanson. Max Krance scored Pat Boran on a sacrifice fly to put the Tigers up 2-0. Watterson led off the third inning with a hit, advanced to second on an error by the centerfielder and scored on a base hit by Boran.
Princeton ran away with the game in the sixth inning scoring five unearned runs. After an error, two walks and a pitching change, Eric Voelker hit an RBI sac fly to score Hanson. Tim Phillips cleared the bases with a triple and scored on an error by the rightfielder.
The Blue Devils scored two runs in the seventh inning and another in the eighth to cut the lead to three. Starting catcher Hildreth took the mound in the ninth striking out the lead off batter. JD Alleva flew out to center field and Troy Caradonna grounded out to Hanson for an 8-5 Princeton win. Ryan Caradonna (2-6) suffered the loss for Duke.
Princeton will play game two of the three-game series on Friday, March 23 at 3:00 p.m.
