Princeton Drops Doubleheader To Delaware

NEWARK, Del. - Princeton lost both seven-inning games of a doubleheader with Delaware 4-2 and 10-4 on Sunday. The twin bill marked the final two games of a 10-day road trip. The Tigers (4-12) went 3-9 playing 12 games in nine days.
Jon Watterson scored from first base on a double by Pat Boran in the top of the seventh inning to bring the Tigers within two runs in game one. Andrew Hanson represented the tying run at the plate but flew out to left field. Max Krance grounded to the second baseman to end game one.
Princeton scored its first run of the afternoon in the second inning. Casey Hildreth singled and scored on Ryan Achterberg's sacrifice fly to center field. Vince Vulkovich brought in two runs in the third for Delaware with a base hit to give the Blue Hens a 2-1 lead. Delaware (12-5) added to its lead with a run in the fourth and fifth innings for a 4-2 win.
Chris Higgins (1-2) went the distance in the first game, his second complete game of the season. Higgins gave up four runs on eight hits with one strike out in 6.0 innings pitched.
In the second game, Boran and Hanson scored Sean McNally and Watterson on back-to-back RBI base hits in the third inning to lead 2-0. Tim Lahey hit a stand up double off the right field wall to lead off the sixth inning and scored when Mickey Martin doubled to center. Eric Voelker's pinch-hit single scored Martin.
With a 5-4 lead, Delaware put the second game out of reach for Princeton scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Nathan Miller (0-1) gave up five runs on seven hits and struck out one over 3.2 innings pitched in the Princeton loss.
Princeton will play its first home game of the season against Rutgers on Wednesday, March 28 at 3:00 p.m. at Clarke Field.
