Princeton Baseball Splits With Yale In Doubleheader

PRINCETON, N.J. - Bill Broome struck out the side in the seventh inning to end the game and pick up his first save of the season in Princeton's 4-2 win over Yale in game one of a doubleheader. Yale (5-8, 1-1) defeated Princeton (5-14, 1-1 Ivy) 9-2 in game two.
Princeton and Yale managed to play the scheduled seven and nine-inning games in the first Ivy League outing of the year for both teams despite rain for most of the morning.
Eric Voelker was 2-for-3 in game one and scored Princeton's first run after he reached on a triple and was scored on a Mickey Martin sacrifice fly. The Tigers scored two runs in the fifth inning after Jon Watterson's triple scored Tim Phillips and Pat Boran's sac fly scored Watterson for a 3-1 Princeton lead. Yale scored a run in the fourth inning on three straight base hits and Steven Duke singled in Darren Beasley in the sixth for Yale's second run.
Steve Young pinch ran for Voelker who reached on a base hit, stole second and third, and then scored on an RBI-double by Phillips. David Boehle (1-2) earned his first win giving up two runs on six hits and striking out four over 6.0 innings pitched.
Yale defeated Princeton in the second game on the strength of starting pitcher Jon Steitz (2-2). Steitz threw a complete game and struck out 14 Princeton batters. Chris Higgins (1-3) gave up eight runs on eight hits in 5.0 innings pitched in the loss for Princeton. Casey Hildreth scored Max Krance and Boran on on a single to leftfield for the two Tiger runs.
Princeton will play a doubleheader with Brown on Sunday, April 1. The first game is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. with the second game scheduled to start approximately 30 minutes following the conclusion of game one.
