Princeton Baseball Splits With Columbia

PRINCETON, N.J. - The Princeton baseball team (11-17, 6-4) earned a split of a doubleheader with Columbia (12-19, 6-4) on Friday, winning the first game 1-0 and losing the second game 9-2. Both teams began the day with identical 5-3 Gehrig Division records and ended the day still tied for first place in the division with 6-4 records.
Ryan Quillian (5-1) pitched his third complete game for his third consecutive win and second shutout of the season in the 1-0 victory in game one. The sophomore struck out seven batters, issued only two walks, and allowed three hits in the seven-inning game. Quillian's performance is almost identical to his outing last week in the win over Dartmouth where he struck out nine and allowed no walks in the three-hit shutout. Princeton's winning run was unearned in the fifth inning. Tim Phillips scored the go ahead run after leading off the inning with a stand-up double. He advanced to third on a pinch-hit bunt by Eric Fitzgerald. Andrew Hanson reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on an error by Columbia shortstop William Hess, scoring Phillips.
Columbia led off the fifth and sixth innings with standup doubles. Quillian ended both innings with strikeouts. He retired the side four times in the game.
Columbia opened up game two putting two runs on the board in the first inning. Matt Buckmiller led off with a double and scored on a balk by Princeton starting pitcher Nathan Miller. Justin Berti reached on a single and scored on a wild pitch giving Columbia an early 2-0 lead.
Mickey Martin led off the third with a triple to the left field wall and scored on a double down the right field line by Fitzgerald. Jon Watterson followed up with another double to left sending Fitzgerald home.
The Lions added four runs in the third inning, Nick Solaro doing most of the work with a three-run home run. Pete Aswad homered in the seventh inning adding to the 9-2 Columbia advantage. Adam Schwartz (3-2) pitched a complete game in the win for Columbia giving up two runs on 12 hits and striking out three.
Princeton and Columbia match up again in a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 14 at 12:00 p.m.
