Princeton Baseball Wins Doubleheader Against Columbia, 6-1 and 8-5

PRINCETON, N.J. - Princeton took both games of a doubleheader with Columbia on Saturday, 6-1 and 8-5, taking over first place in the Gehrig Division of the Ivy League with an 8-4 record. The Tiger won three out of four with the Lions.
Senior Max Krance had a six-RBI day going two for four with four RBIs in game one and two for four with two RBIs in game two.
Krance started off in the first inning of game one with a two-RBI base hit sending Jon Watterson and Pat Boran home for a 2-0 Princeton lead. Eric Fitzgerald scored the Tigers third run in the second inning on a wild pitch after reaching on an error. Krance singled again scoring Watterson and Andrew Hanson extending Princeton's lead to 5-0. Fitzgerald scored Mickey Martin with an RBI-single to left field. Martin reached on an error by Columbia third baseman Andrew Pisano, the Lions' third error in three innings.
David Boehle (2-3) pitched his first complete game of the season in the win. He struck out five and allowed one run on four hits taking his shutout into the seventh inning. Nickolas Solaro hit his second home run of the season, his second in two days, to lead off the top of the seventh inning. Boehle retired the side in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings.
In the first inning of game two, Krance scored Watterson, again with a base hit, and Martin hit a two-run stand up triple clearing the bases for an early 3-0 Princeton lead. Krance scored Boran with a single to right field after he reached on an error. Hanson came home on a Martin sacrifice fly to left giving Princeton two more runs in the third.
Game two starter Chris Higgins gave up two runs in the fourth inning on three hits. Tom Rowland entered the game with one out and faced three batters end the inning. Rowland's only hit of the sixth inning was a one-run home run to Derek Johnson to bring Columbia within two runs of Princeton.
Boran belted a two-out three-run homer in the sixth inning giving the Tigers an 8-3 lead. The ball looked as if it would hook foul but cleared the left field wall for his second dinger of the year.
Columbia scored a run in the seventh inning and a run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to make the score 8-5. With the bases loaded, the winning run at the plate and Columbia rally caps on, Tim Phillips made a diving stop to his knees on a grounder and flipped the ball to Rowland covering first for the final out of the game. Rowland earned his third consecutive win giving up three runs on five hits and striking out three in 5.2 innings.
Princeton will play Long Island University on Tuesday, Apr. 17 at 3:00 p.m. and Monmouth on Thursday, Apr. 19 at 3:30 p.m. Princeton resumes division play in doubleheaders at Penn on Apr. 21 and 22.
