Softball Splits Doubleheader with Brown

Providence, R.I. - The Princeton Tigers split this afternoon's doubleheader with Brown, winning the first game 5-2 and losing the second 5-4. The Tigers currently stand at 12-11 on the season, and 3-5 in the Ivy League. Princeton will travel to Hofstra on Thursday, April 19 and will continue with Ivy League competition on Saturday, April 21 when they travel to Columbia.
The Tigers scored early in the first game, posting four runs by the end of the second inning. Sophomore Anna Soper began the Tiger scoring effort when she scored off a single by junior shortstop Kim Veenstra. Veenstra, who had advance to third on a throwing error by the center fielder, scored when senior Devon Keefe hit a single to the shortstop. Sophomore, Jen Neil began Princeton's scoring effort in the second when she singled to the shortstop and then stole second base. Senior Lori Volker picked up the RBI when she hit a triple into right field. Volker scored, after tagging up on a sac fly hit off the bat of Lauren Poniatowski. Veenstra would pick up the Tiger's fifth run when she smacked a one out homerun in the fifth inning. Sarah Jane White picked up the win allowing only one run on five hits. Freshman Kelly Gaydos had her debut has a Tiger pitcher, facing four batters in the seventh inning.
Princeton, who trailed much of the second game 3-1, took a 4-3 lead in the seventh inning. Brown was able to answer with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the game, 5-4. Princeton's Wendy Bingham picked up the lost, allowing four runs on eight hits. White replaced her early in the seventh inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Brown's Erin Durlesser hit a single into left field scoring Angie Galt for the game winning run. Brown's Aleana Sutton picked up the win for the Bears.
Lauren Poniatowski had three hits in the second game and registered one RBI. Brie Galicinao, who did not play in today's games, except for pinch-hitting in the seventh inning of the second game, picked up two RBIs when she drove in Vicki Siesta and Erin Valocsik. Kim Veenstra, who went 3 for 4 in the first game, hit only 1 for 4 in the second. The lone hit in the second game was enough to stretch her current hitting streak to 12 games.
The Tigers will travel to Hofstra for their next doubleheader, scheduled for April 19.
