PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Princeton swept Penn in a doubleheader, 8-2 and 8-7 on Sunday, improving to 17-19 overall and 11-5 in the Gehrig Division of the Ivy League. Max Krance, Andrew Hanson and Eric Voelker all hit home runs for the first-place Tigers and Hanson and Krance each had five hits on the day.
Hanson had three RBIs in game one. He drove in two runs in the first inning ripping a triple down the right field line to score Jon Watterson and Pat Boran. Casey Hildreth scored Hanson with a sacrifice fly to center for a 3-0 Princeton lead. An error by Penn (20-15, 6-10) centerfielder Andrew McCreery on a Hanson fly out in the third inning allowed Boran to score from second after he led off with a double. Krance hit a two-run shot to right center to score Hanson who lead off the fifth inning with a double. It was his second home run of the season.
Chris May led off the bottom of the fifth inning with his ninth home run of the year for Penn. Penn batters followed with three consecutive base hits. Princeton starter David Boehle struck out Ron Rolph and Steve Glass flew out to center field ending the inning and leaving three runners stranded. Princeton led 6-1 after five innings.
Hanson drove in his third run of the game with a base hit that dropped just inside of the third base foul line to score Eric Fitzgerald. Watterson made the score 8-1 crossing the plate on a wild pitch. Watterson was 2 for 4 with two RBIs.
Boehle won his third game of the season. He gave up two runs on seven hits and struck out one in 5.1 innings. Thomas Pauly pitched 1.2 innings in relief giving up no runs on no hits and striking out three.
Hanson tied game two 4-4 with a two-run home run in the fifth inning. Penn got out to a 4-0 lead with a run in the first and seconds innings and two runs in the third. Mike Chernoff scored Krance with an RBI-single to center and Martin walked in after Watterson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to pull the Tigers within two in the fourth inning setting the stage for Hanson.
Watterson hit a double to right field scoring Fitzgerald from first for the go ahead run in sixth-inning. Krance extended the Tiger lead in the inning with an RBI-double that sailed over the head of McCreery in center field. Eric Voelker led off the seventh inning with a one run home run to center field, his first of the season.
Penn scored two runs with back-to-back singles to begin the seventh inning. Pauly entered the game for his second relief appearance of the day, taking over for game two starter Tom Rowland with one out and two on. Another run scored on a Princeton fielding error before Pauly struck out Billy Collins to end the inning. Pauly retired the side in the eighth before he earned his first save of the season. He struck out four allowing no runs on one hit in 2.2 innings. Rowland improved to 4-3 on the season with three strikeouts and seven runs on nine hits in 6.1 innings.
Princeton's game with Temple on Tuesday, Apr. 24 was cancelled due to a Temple scheduling conflict. Princeton will host a doubleheader with Cornell on Friday Apr. 27 at 12:00 p.m.
