Box Score
The Princeton softball team defeated the Lions of Columbia University in both games of today's doubleheader, winning the first game 4-0 and the nightcap 7-0. The victories follow a disappointing showing at Hofstra where the Tigers recently lost 2 games. The Tigers stand at 14-13 on the season and 5-5 in the Ivy League. Columbia falls to 14-20, 3-9 in the Ivy League.
In the pitcher's circle for the Tigers in today's first match was junior, Brie Galicinao. Galicinao entered today's match with a 6-6 record and has been plagued by an injury in her back. Galicinao, who leads the Tiger pitchers with an ERA of 0.85 allowed only five hits in the shutout. Galicinao struck out 11 Lions and walked only one batter, her first batter faced. Columbia's Allison Buehler picked up the loss for the Lions. The Tigers, who came out flat in the games at Hofstra, started the scoring early. Lori Volker, the lead-off batter for the Tigers, reached first when she was hit by a pitch. Volker moved to second base when third baseman Lauren Poniatowski laid down a sacrifice bunt. Galicinao, who would finish the day after hitting four doubles, hit her first into centerfield and drove Volker home.
The Tigers scored three more runs in the sixth inning to go up 4-0. Volker, Galicinao and Kim Veenstra scored for Princeton in the sixth. Galicinao, Anna Soper and Devon Keefe picked up the RBIs.
Wendy Bingham, one of Princeton's several freshman who have started many of the games this season, was the winning pitcher in the second game against Columbia. Bingham moves to 2-4 on the season and earned her first shutout as a Tiger pitcher. Bingham struck out six Lion batters, did not give up a walk, and allowed only three hits in her first complete game.
Galicinao, playing at first base, finished the second game going 3-4 at the plate, batted in four Tiger runs and scored one run. Galicinao's three hits were all doubles blasted into left and left-center field.
Two Tiger starters, batting in the bottom of the order, Mackenzie Forsythe and Jen Neil, hit very well for the Tigers in today's second game and scored a combined four runs for their team. Forsythe, who has struggled at the plate for much of the season went 2-3, hit a double and scored two runs. Neil, went 3-3 for at the plate, hit one double, picked up one RBI and scored two runs.
Once again the Tigers struck first, scoring three runs in the third inning. Princeton added one run in the forth, one in the fifth and scored two more in the sixth to take the Lions, 7-0.
Princeton will face the league-leading Big Red of Cornell University tomorrow, April 22 in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at noon.
