HANOVER, N.H. - Freshman Steve Young hit a two-out RBI-single up the middle to score Mickey Martin in the 10th inning to give Princeton the 6-5 win over Dartmouth and the Tigers' their second consecutive Ivy League Championship on Sunday.
The at-bat was Young's 11th of the season and first in the series. "I just knew I had to get the ball in play," said Young. "But I knew the way I'd been swinging the bat in practice that I could get the bat on the ball."
Jon Watterson tied the game 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth with a double to centerfield. Watterson's first hit of the game scored Young from first base who was pinch running for Sean McNally. "The leftfielder had been covering ground all day so I wasn't sure if it was going to drop," said Watterson. "They pitched me fast balls all day today, which is what I usually hit, and the curve ball is the one I ended up hitting."
Freshman Thomas Pauly took the mound in relief in the ninth inning for starter Tom Rowland and struck out the side. With two outs and runners at the corners, Pauly and the Princeton defense held off the Big Green in the top of the 10th. Pauly (2-0) earned his second consecutive win of the season.
Senior Brian Nickerson was 5 for 5 with two home runs and five RBIs for Dartmouth. Jeff Dutremble (1-0) took the loss for the Big Green.
"As excited I am for our guys, I really feel for Dartmouth," said head coach Scott Bradley. "Dartmouth is a team very much like us, but we just found a way today. They are absolutely a class bunch of guys."
