Princeton, N.J. - Gerard Garlic is set to join the Princeton women's basketball coaching staff after spending the last three years as head coach at Morgan State. Garlic is the second addition to Richard Barron's staff this summer, completing a staff already consisting of Jen Scanlon (Duke '96) and Helen Williams (Wake Forest '87).
"I am very pleased to have someone of Gerard's experience in this position," says head coach Richard Barron. "Gerard will be a tremendous asset to our staff and our players. I expect he will add tremendously to our defensive development, especially at the guard positions. This is another step in the right direction for our program. I felt before, and now even more, that I have the finest assistant coaches in the Ivy League."
While at Morgan State, Garlic earned MEAC Coach of the Year status in 2000. His squad finished that year with 17 wins, the most in a season since the 1983-84 Morgan State team. He served as an assistant at Morgan for three seasons before moving into a head role. A 1995 graduate of Goucher College, Garlic captained his team for three seasons at the point. While at Goucher, Garlic's team won two conference championships and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament in 1995. Garlic finished his career as Goucher's all-time steals leader and in the Top-15 in scoring, field goal percentage and blocked shots. He finished three seasons among the NCAA's Top-10 in steals and was the Capital Athletic Conference steals leader in each of those three seasons.
Princeton begins its second season under the direction of Richard Barron at the Women's Sports Foundation Tournament at Baylor on Nov. 22. The Tigers open with the host Bears at 7 p.m.
"I'm just excited to be here," says Garlic. "This is an excellent opportunity to be a part of some very good things. I'm looking forward to the 2002-03 season at Princeton."
