Matt Maglione posted a goal and an assist to lead the Princeton men's ice hockey team past the U.S. National Under-18 team in an exhibition game played Saturday night at Hobey Baker Memorial Rink. Maglione assisted on Dan Hursh's game-winner midway through the third period.
The U.S. team opened the scoring at the 12:08 mark of the first period. Kevin Coughlin picked up a loose puck behind the Tiger net, skated in front and took a shot that was redirected off a Tiger stick, through goaltender Nate Nomeland's legs and into the net.
Princeton trailed 1-0 until Maglione evened up the score with a power-play goal at 3:36 of the second period. With Robbie Earl serving a hooking penalty, Princeton worked the puck around the top of the zone until Maglione fired a snapshot through Wylie Rogers' legs. Scott Prime and Steve Slaton notched assists on the goal. The score remained knotted at one until midway through the third period when the Tigers scored two goals in a 12 second span. First, Hursh, standing in the right circle, redirected a Maglione point shot into the U.S. net, and then captain George Parros found a loose puck in front of the net and roofed it over Rogers. Mike Patton and Sharam Fouladgar-Mercer assisted on the play.
All three Tiger goaltenders saw action in the game. Nomeland made 13 saves in the first period, Trevor Clay turned aside eight shots in the second, and Eric Leroux stopped one in the third and earned the win.
The Tigers play another exhibition game tomorrow afternoon against Western Ontario at Hobey Baker Memorial Rink, before opening the season next Friday night, hosting North Dakota.
