Princeton, N.J. - Matt Douglas scored on a breakaway goal in the 80th minute, breaking a scoreless tie and giving Princeton a 1-0 win over Harvard at Lourie-Love Field on Saturday evening. The Tigers get right back into the Ivy League race with their first conference win of season, handing Harvard its first Ivy loss in the process.
The game was intense from the outset. Seven yellow cards set the tone for a contest that was even on the stats page. Princeton took one more shot and was called for one more foul than Harvard. The Tigers had one less corner kick and the same amount of goalie saves, but in the end, scored one more goal to get the win.
Each team had several opportunities to score, but it was Douglas who took a pass from freshman Alex Reison on a Princeton breakaway and put away his team-high third goal of the season. It was his first game-winning goal as the Tigers improve to 3-6-4 overall. "We've been doing things well all season, but haven't been able to make that play to win the game down the stretch," says Princeton coach Jim Barlow. "We were able to weather a storm and get a good goal at the end. This is definitely a step in the right direction."
Sophomore Erik White finished with four saves as eight different Tigers took shots. Harvard goalkeeper Jamie Roth also finished with four saves. White improves to 2-3-2 as a starter.
The Tigers are now 1-2-1 in the Ivy League, Harvard falls to 8-4-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the conference. Princeton plays its third-straight home contest next Wednesday, Oct. 30 when it hosts Rutgers at 7 p.m. The Tigers are 2-1-3 at home this season.
