Heather Deerin (Sr., Livingston, N.J.) became the third Princeton women's soccer player and 34th athlete in Princeton history to be a four-time first-team All-Ivy League selection when the 2002 All-Ivy women's soccer team was announced today.
Deerin joins Nnena Odim and Lynn Prescott, both of whom played in the early 1980s, as Princeton's four-time first-team All-Ivy women's soccer players. She is the 15th player in Ivy women's soccer history to accomplish the feat.
Deerin is the leader of a defense that has allowed no more than one goal in any game and just nine goals in 16 games.
Joining Deerin as a first-team All-Ivy selection was Esmeralda Negron (So.,, Harrington Park, N.J.), who leads the Tigers with eight goals and 17 points. Negron has also scored five game-winning goals, including two in overtime.
Freshman Emily Behncke (Fr., Williamsburg, Va.) was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Year, Behncke, who scored five goals, is the younger sister of Princeton graduate Matt Behncke, the 1998 Ivy Rookie of the Year in soccer. The Behnckes are now the first brother-sister combination each to win Ivy Rookie of the Year honors in any sport in league history. Behncke was also one of three second-team selections for Princeton. Rochelle Willis (So., Unionville, Ont.) and fellow-defender Brea Griffiths (So., Burlington, Ont.) were also named to the second team.
Janine Willis (So., Unionville, Ont.) and Krista Ariss (Sr., Burlington, Ont.) were honorable mention selections.
