Trevor Clay made 42 saves, including 39 in the final two periods, to lead the Princeton's men's hockey team to a 4-3 win over RPI in front of 1,993 at Baker Rink Saturday night.
The victory was Princeton's first after an 0-5-0 start. The Tigers improved to 1-3-0 in the ECAC.
"It's been a rough start," Clay said. "We've played some very good teams. To get everything started, it only takes one win. That's what we did tonight."
Princeton bounced back from a tough loss to Union Friday night and never trailed against RPI. After making six first-period saves, Clay was forced to make 21 saves in the second period and 18 more in the third.
"Trevor was outstanding," said Princeton coach Len Quesnelle. "We gave up too many point-blank shots, but it was typical Trevor. He was very good, very good all night." Clay's biggest save came with Princeton ahead 4-2 with 2:28 to go, when he dove in front of an open net to rob RPI's Kevin Croxton. RPI scored 17 seconds later to cut it to one.
"I knew he had a lot of net open," said Clay, who got the first win over his career. "I just tried to reach as far as I could with my glove, and I put it in the right spot. The first period was quiet, but it picked up after that. It keeps you in the game."
Princeton led 2-0 after the first period after Dan Hursh's goal at the 9:21 mark and Stevenson-Moore's first on a power-play with 1:04 to go.
RPI scored the only goal of the second period when Scott Romfo flipped one past Clay at the 11:45 mark to make it 2-1, and it stayed that way until the second half of the third period.
Matt Maglione, who assisted on Hursh's goal, scored on a power-play goal midway through the period on a nice feed from Luc Paquin. RPI answered with a power-play goal by Croxton to cut it to 3-2, but Stevenson-Moore took a perfect feed from Mike Patton and made it 4-2 53 seconds later, with 4:06 to play.
"We've played a tough schedule," Stevenson-Moore said. "We' ve played three of the top 11 teams in the country. We're very young, and the guys are still finding their way. Tonight was a great example of how far we've come."
