Box Score
Trevor Clay turned aside 41 shots to help lead Princeton to a 4-3 win over Rensselaer Sunday afternoon in the consolation game of the 52nd Annual Rensselaer/HSBC Holiday Hockey Tournament at Houston Fieldhouse. Princeton's lone win of the season prior to tonight came on Nov. 16 against Rensselaer at Baker Rink. The score of that game was also 4-3.
Rensselaer controlled play early in the first period, breaking through at the 15:56 mark to take a 1-0 lead. Kevin Croxton scored on a tic-tac-toe play from just outside the crease. The assists on the goal came from Alexander Valentin and Carson Butterwick.
After the goal, the momentum began to shift towards Princeton and the Tigers broke through less than a minute later to even the score at 1-1. Chris Owen fed Neil Stevenson-Moore who skated the puck behind the Engineer net and came in front to stuff it past RPI goaltender Nathan Marsters. It was Stevenson-Moore's fifth goal of the season and third against Rensselaer. Princeton scored again 22 seconds later to take a 2-1 lead. Seamus Young banked a pass to Dustin Sproat deep in the defensive zone. Sproat carried it out and fed Patrick Neundorfer with a breakaway pass at the RPI blueline. Neundorfer skated in and beat Martsters through the five-hole. Princeton extended its lead to 3-1 2:45 into the second period when Neundorfer posted his second goal of the night and fourth of the season. Sproat fed Neudorfer in the offensive zone where he ripped a shot past Marsters. Mark Masters added an assist on the goal. The Engineers fought back, scoring at 12:22 to move within a goal. Matt Barr scored the 4-on-4 goal on a rebound of his own shot following an odd-man rush. Princeton reclaimed a two-goal lead at 14:48 of the period when Mike Patton notched the teams' first shorthanded goal of the season. Scott Prime's aggressive forechecking caused an offensive zone turnover, and then he fed Patton who one-timed his fifth goal of the season.
Rensselaer moved back within a goal at 2:56 of the third period when Barr scored his second goal of the night. Ryan Shields set up the one-timer.
Trevor Clay made 41 saves to earn his second win of the year while Nathan Marsters made 28 saves in the loss.
