Box Score
Princeton, N.J. - Kelly Schaeffer led three Princeton players in double figures with a career-high 28 points, but it wasn't quite enough on Saturday night as Yale squeaked out an 85-80 overtime win at Jadwin Gym. A Princeton women's basketball record crowd of 3,067 watched 24 lead changes and 31 overtime points on a night were hot shooting would be the theme.
Princeton took advantage of 15 Yale turnovers to grab an early lead. Schaeffer came out firing and scored 10 of Princeton's first 12 points. The Bulldogs kept close and took their first lead on a three-pointer from Bonnie Smith that made the score 21-19. Yale's 6-0 run with 1:39 remaining in the first period gave the Elis a 35-28 lead, their biggest lead of the half.
Karen Bolster erased a three-point halftime deficit with a three-pointer to tie the score at 38-38 about three minutes into the second period. Bolster's second straight three-pointer gave Princeton a 41-40 lead and Maureen Lane's three-point basket pushed the lead to 44-42. The Bulldogs pushed ahead, but Lane's second three tied the score at 47-47. Smith put the Bulldogs up 63-60 with five quick points and with 2:36 remaining, Schaeffer calmly side-stepped Smith and knocked down a three-point shot to tie the score again. Smith answered with a jumper and with a Princeton free throw and another Yale jumper the Elis led 67-64 with 15 seconds remaining.
Allison Cahill created separation and hoisted a game-tying three-point shot that found the bottom of the net. The Tigers had the last possession of regulation but with four second and a full court to go, they could not get a shot off. The Bulldogs and Tigers went into the extra period tied at 67-67.
Cahill scored seven points in overtime, but Yale scored 18 as a team and edged out Princeton by five points. Cahill finished with 17 points and five rebounds, Lane ended the game with 13 points and four rebounds. Lauren Rigney scored nine and Bolster added eight with two threes. Smith led the Yale charge with 16 and Helene Schutrumpf scored 15 points to propel the Bulldogs to victory.
Princeton is now 1-2 in overtime games this year and 1-12 when trailing at halftime. The Tigers fall to 8-12 overall and 2-5 in the Ivy League while Yale improves to 11-10 overall and 4-3 in conference play. The Bulldogs shot 53 percent from the field and 62 percent from three-point range. Princeton's 13 triples ties a team record set in 1999 against Pennsylvania.
The record crowd of 3,067, due in large part to the 16th annual National Girls and Women In Sports Day celebration, breaks a mark of 2,192 set a year ago on National Girls and Women In Sports Day.
Princeton resumes play at Dartmouth and at Harvard next Friday-Saturday, Feb. 15-16.
